Core Teachings & Principles

The Bahá’í Faith teaches that all humanity is one family created by one loving God. Throughout history, God has guided us through Divine Messengers who renew religion and advance civilization. The teachings of the Faith focus on personal spiritual growth and the building of a united, peaceful world.

Oneness of God, Religion, and Humanity

Bahá’ís believe in:

  • One God — The Source of all creation, beyond full human understanding yet known through His attributes (love, justice, mercy, wisdom).
  • One Religion — All the great religions come from the same Divine Source. Their spiritual foundations are one, even though their social teachings change according to the needs of the time.
  • One Human Family — All people belong to one human race. Differences of race, culture, or nationality are expressions of the beauty of human diversity, not reasons for division.

“So powerful is the light of unity that it can illuminate the whole earth.” — Bahá’u’lláh

The Bahá’í Faith sees humanity as moving toward its maturity — a time of global cooperation, peace, and justice.

Progressive Revelation

God has never left humanity alone. Throughout history, He has sent Messengers such as Krishna, Abraham, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, Muhammad, the Báb, and Bahá’u’lláh.

Each brings:

  • Spiritual teachings that never change (love, honesty, kindness, humility)
  • Social teachings suited to the needs of the time (laws, community guidance, societal reforms)

Bahá’u’lláh is the most recent Messenger, whose teachings are meant for a global age — one in which humanity has become interconnected and is learning to live as one family.

Key Principles of the Bahá’í Faith

  • Independent investigation of truth — Seek truth with your own eyes, not through blind imitation.
  • Elimination of prejudice — Racial, national, religious, gender, and class prejudice must end.
  • Equality of women and men — Both are equal in the sight of God and must participate fully in all aspects of life.
  • Harmony of science and religion — True religion and true science are in harmony; both are essential.
  • Universal education — Every human being deserves education.
  • Spiritual solutions to economic problems — Wealth and resources should be used with justice and compassion.
  • Consultation — A spiritual method of decision-making based on truth-seeking and unity.
  • Work as worship — Service to others and work done in a spirit of excellence is a form of prayer.

These principles guide both personal life and the development of communities.

Putting Teachings Into Action

Bahá’ís strive not only to believe these principles, but to live them.

Community activities often focus on:

  • Personal spiritual growth and prayer
  • Service to others and the betterment of society
  • Children’s classes and youth empowerment
  • Study and reflection gatherings
  • Devotional meetings that welcome all people
  • Building unity across cultures, races, and backgrounds

Bahá’ís work alongside neighbors, friends, and people of all beliefs to build a world based on justice, peace, and cooperation.

“The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established.” — Bahá’u’lláh
